Sister Frances Ann Thom went home to God on December 29, 2014, at the Franciscan Villa in Syracuse, New York. She was born in Syracuse, New York to Frank and Nellie Kielar Thom and was in religious life for 62 years, 9 of which were spent as a Poor Clare in the Monastery of St. Clare in Lowell, MA. Sister received a Bachelor's Degree in English from LeMoyne College, a Masters in English from Catholic University of America and a Masters in Franciscan Studies from St. Bonaventure University. As a Sister of St. Francis sister taught in New York State schools in Syracuse, Utica, Fayetteville, Mattydale, Oswego and also in Lorain, Ohio. She worked for five years setting up a Hermitage in Green Lakes. Sister went on to work in Parish Ministry at St. Mary's in Baldwinsville. She also served in Pastoral Ministry at Holy Trinity Parish and St. Daniel Parish, Catholic Chaplin at Rosewood Heights and the Director of Mission and Spiritual Care at Mercy Health and Rehab services in Auburn. In 1995, Sister was elected to the Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Francis and in 2000 was elected to the Hawaii Region Council. She served as a Mission Educator at St. Francis Health Care System in Hawaii. Sister Frances Ann loved to write articles, was a member of the National League of American Pen Women and also had some of her poems and articles published. Sister will be remembered by those who knew her for her years of love, devotion and dedicated service to her community, the field of education, Franciscan Spirituality and her loving pastoral care for those in need. Sister is survived by her sister, Mary (Donald) Uhl; a niece, Martha (Rodney) Holbrook; two nephews, Steve (Lori) Uhl, Peter (Darcie) Uhl; several cousins; grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and the Sisters of St. Francis. Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 7pm Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Franciscan Villa Chapel, 6900 Buckley Road, Syracuse, New York 13212. Calling hours will be from 3:30 to 6:30pm Friday at the chapel prior to the Mass. A farewell service will be held at 8:30am on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the Franciscan Villa Chapel. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities Mission Advancement Office, 6900 Buckley Road, Syracuse, N.Y. 13212.
